For years I have been wanting to know more about the show Monsterpiece Theater because I have been given conflicting information about this. When I saw this, I remember it came on in the early 80s and was hosted by a woman in a fright wig named 'Millicent B. Ghastly'. She was a great host and showed odd little cult movies such as Jon Voight's first film "Fearless Frank' and the Robert Feust film 'And Soon the Darkness'. Most people who remember this have told me this didn't air until much later and Cruiser was the host and he showed Universal horror films. I have no recollection of that at all! I talked to someone from the Kentucky Theater who told me that Millicent B. Ghastly filmed segments for her show there, but was unable to give me the years this aired. I've contacted WLEX as well regarding never recieved a reply. Any info and even a list of some of the movies that were shown would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Actually, Monsterpiece Theatre was on for about a year (?) around the 1986 time frame (because I remember the apartment I was living in at the time). The woman host was on for the first few months of the show -- afterwards, Cruiser was the host up until the show was cancelled. Monsterpiece Theatre aired after Saturday Night Live. I remember the films ranging from Plan 9 From Outer Space to the classic Universal horrors.

After Millicent b. Ghastly left the show, MonsterPiece Theatre improved greatly with two new hosts... Kruiser and Kelly, the two morning comedy deejays on the Lexington station 98.1 WKQQ. What was great was they actually did research on the movie they were showing and talked about everyone from Bela Lugosi to Boris Karloff. Kelly could be seen reading from notes he had prepared for the show. I remember on some occasions he would refer to Thriller 18 that was the forerunner of Monsterpiece Theater. It was nice to see the original show acknowledged. Of course in my opinion, they should have stuck with the established name of Thriller 18 instead of Monsterpiece Theater. Each week - the opening showed Kruiser and Kelly arrive by limo at the Kentucky Theater in Lexington which made it appear as if they were going inside to watch the movies on the big screen at the historic theater. Of course the actual show was done in the WLEX studios. Fortunately they dropped the antics of the stage hands and the Little Blue Guy that was a part of the Millicent B. Ghastly show. Although they did comedy bits about Lexington, Kentucky area people (ie. the University of Kentucky Basketball team that was going through tough times with injuries during the 1986/87 season for example). I think Monsterpiece Theatre went off the air in 1988. It didn't have a host at that time, and I believe their last movie was Night of the Living Dead on Halloween night or weekend." Those were the days.

One film they showed had two young girls are on a bike-riding tour through Europe when one of them was murdered. The surviving girl perhaps didn't know she was dead and was being stalked by the killer. Can't remember the title. I also remember the old Universal films. They showed Fog Island with George Zucco. It was the most entertaining thing on TV then. It was a late night show and most of the stations had signed off the air by this time.

For those who don't remember Millicent B. Ghastly, just imagine Elvira but not funny. It was an amateurish "valley girl impression." She had a funky wig and oversized glasses and wore bizarre clothes (with a Laverne-like insignia that said ARRRGH! across the front of her shirts). She had lots of people doing cameos like the Channel 18 weather guy and stage hands and even a cookie monster puppet they called the Little Blue Guy (he didn't have any feet)." On the first episode in 1984 Millicent Ghastly apparently couldn't find her way into the studio. The first segment dealt with helping her get into WLEX. The highlight was when her segments ended and the classic Universal films began. They showed classics like Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Invisible Man. While the show was on she had a fan club and would read letters from the mailbag on the air. Sometimes, they would accidentally run nude scenes on the air or play Gumby cartoons for inexplicable reasons. It was a Saturday late-night show that followed Saturday Night Live (1-3 a.m.) on WLEX, Channel 18 in Lexington, Kentucky. It ran from 1984 - 1986. The show continued with other hosts until 1988. As bad as Millicent B. Ghastly was, WLEX is to be commended for putting out the effort of getting a local host for classic horror movies. It was done at a time when hardly any stations were doing this anymore and it was a nice throwback for viewers. Too bad stations today would rather play info-merricals than to do something local.

Thanks for all the info! I realize this doesn't have anything to do with 60s tv so I appreciate it. One of the reasons I'm really eager to learn about this is that I have distinct memories of watching this show in the house where my family used to live in before I graduated from High School in 86. This website claims the show originally aired in 84: myweb.wvnet.edu/e-gor/tvhorrorhosts/hostsm.html but people I've talked to who remember watching this (and there's not many) says otherwise. But I do remember thinking she was quite unfunny! It's still pretty remarkable that I know of few people who remember her as the host. The movie with the bikers was 'And Soon the Darkness'. 'Fog Island' I will have to check out, not sure if I've seen this or not. Was that the black and white zombie movie? I hate that I completely missed Kelly and Cruiser hosting this show. It must have been a bad time on SNL that I must have stopped watching. The guy I spoke to must have been thinking about cruiser and Kelley filming the intro there. Infomericials are everywhere but I was talking to a friend who is younger than I am and he is disappointed that he's never experienced a horror host-type tv show. thanks y'all

First, if you want to see some Millicent B. Ghastly footage check out www.youtube.com/nolegsblueguy. I'm putting everything I have up... sadly, it is only four show's worth of host segments. Second, the show most assuredly did not get better when Kruser and Kelly took over. They cared very little for the movies, and instead focused mainly on Kentucky politics and sports, as it was at the time. It was great if you liked Kruser's morning show... but it was not a horror movie host show. It was basically a local celebrity endorsement, which was about as thrilling as when Brian Collins and his daughter guested on the show.

The show ran from 1985-1986 with Millie hosting: Kruser's reign lasted 13 weeks. The last 4 shows of Millie's run were when they began doing the Universal catalog... Dracula (1933), Frankenstein (1933), Creature from the Black Lagoon and I believe The Invisible Man was the final movie. Prior to that they showed some real stinkers, but they were movies that most people would never see without such a show to access them... even more obscure than stuff you'd see on MST3K. Who remembers the movie Stanley (1972)? Not many. and that was one of the more popular movies.
Millie did acknowledge that she was basically an Elvira rip-off early in her show, doing a split screen with her outfit and an Elvira DC comic book page. But have you ever watched Elvira? She really was only a pair of boobs and a monologue... her show never seemed to grow beyond that, at least from the bits I've seen.

Thanks for all the info y'all. I was completely wrong about the year. I am thinking they showed obscured cult movies after SNL on wlex before Monsterpiece theater. Completely unrelated to Millie and the other folks.

Just FYI: After Millicent, it wasn't hosed by Kruser and Kelly, it was Kruser and Craig Sloan - who were the original hosts of the Rock and Roll Morning Show.

I enjoyed Millicent and her crew when they did the show, but I enjoyed Kruser and Craig as well. I remember more about their reign as hosts for the show than Millie’s. They opened their show with their arrival at the Kentucky Theater, and their names were on the marquee. I can’t remember exactly when their debut was on the show, but I do remember the Saturday after Halloween 1986 was the first episode I watched with them as hosts. “Son of Dracula” was the movie that night, and the opening skit had them showing each other what they had gotten for Halloween. Craig had gotten a Duraflame log as I recall. A few weeks later, I remember them showing “The House of Frankenstein.” They also showed a couple of the Inner Sanctum thrillers as well. Another skit I recall was when they showed “Murders in the Rue Morgue” from 1932, when in the opening, Kruser and Craig wore toe tags they said they had gotten from the Fayette County Coroner’s office. That show came close to the end of the series, as Craig didn’t have many episodes left. In January 1987 as I recall, Kruser brought in Kelly Gates as what I would guess to be his new sidekick on the show. She only had just three or four episodes before the show was cancelled in February 1987. The first Saturday of February, the program director appeared on screen and announced that Kruser and Craig would not be returning as hosts. There was no mention of it from Kruser the weekend before. The director only said February was to be “Mummy Month,” and the Universal mummy films were shown that month without hosts. After February, I don’t recall anymore horror films shown in the time slot. “Memories of Monsters” on WHAS 11 was then the only locally produced horror show left at that time.
