When my momma and her sisters were teenagers they used to dance on the Nick Clooney show every weekend. I was just wondering if there may still be some of those show’s floating around. Thank you.

No video is known to exist of any of Nick Clooney's days at WKYT. You are referring to a weekly "bandstand"-type TV show that aired on WKYT, originally hosted by Len Carl. When Len moved to another city, Clooney, then in his early 20's, took over as host. The Saturday TV dance party was sponsored by Dr. Pepper. There were 30 "regulars" on the show because they were good dancers. Others would wander in and out of the show occasionally. There were no formal rules. Eventually Nick saluted a different high school each week and asked them to send 35 representative students to dance. Anyone remember this weekly "live" broadcast? Share your memories with us.

I am trying to obtain information as to the possible existence of any archived film footage from the Nick Clooney Teen Dance Show that aired on WKYT. My band appeared on that show, and I would love to obtain a copy of that show if possible. Any contacts, leads, or information of any sort would be greatly appreciated.

the show nick clooney hosted when i was a teenager was called "school salute." this would have been in the early 60s.
he had one guy who did a pantomime song with one of the hits of the day -
clooney did a short feature on the school which he had as guests and the cheerleaders dressed in uniform and did 2 two cheers - the rest was bandstand-like dancing and i am pretty sure it was all live - except for the bit that he shot at each school.

The administrator is right. WKYT used video tape for the Nick Clooney show. At the time it was very expensive and they recorded over the shows to re-use the tapes. I found this out years ago as I was also in a band that played on the show. So unless someone now knows different, we will just have to use our memories.

I was wondering how to go about getting a copy of the Nick Clooney dance show in the 60s as both my mom and dad were dancers on the show. I was told they were very good and I would like to find a copy some how. I heard it was in Lexington Ky. Please help my email is Prinbear1506@aol.com

Rhonda:
In the 1960’s - ’90’s, for the most part, local stations used video tape as a scheduling convenience - to be able to record a show when talent, facilities & staff were available and then air the program when it best fit the program schedule. Circa 1970 a blank one-hour, two-inch tape cost $150-200. The tapes were reused 50-100 times to keep costs down. Local programs were rarely archived due to the tape cost and the huge storage area that would be needed to store them. Advancing technology relegated two-inch video tape into history circa 1980. By 2000 most two-inch tape equipment was related to the trash heap. Even if you might find a two-inch tape somewhere it would be unlikely you could find a machine to play it on except perhaps at a museum. It is my experience that a local station maintains an archive of no more than about 10 years and then only in exceptional circumstances. Much of the local material we see on today YouTube, etc. is derived from private VHS collections.

My father also danced on this show regularly. I wonder if he knew your grandmother. His name is Paul Howard. It was in the 1950's. When my momma and her sisters were teenagers they used to dance on the Nick Clooney show every weekend. I was just wondering if there may still be some of those show’s floating around. Thank you.

I’ve been trying to find a video or any information about the top 10 dance party in 1968 that I went to in Eldorado, AR when I was in the seventh grade. My grandkids can’t believe that I was on TV dancing. Please share if you have any info.

I remember Nick Clooneys show. My high school was on it twice that I know of for I was also the show, since I was a student at Pulaski County High School. I’ve forgotten the year. They taped two shows on the same day.
