Does anyone have any info on when Lexington TV went color. I know WLEX was the first and they were doing local color broadcasts as early as 1963. WKYT was still black and white. Obviously, stations were able to carry network programs in color even before they could broadcast local shows in color. They had to buy all new color cameras which were expensive and all the other color equipment. I assume some Lexington stations carried the network in color before they were able to colorize their local broadcasts.

AS best I can remember our first color show (Network) was Bonanza. We started airing it in 1959. When I left in 1960 we were still b&w locally. We used a GPL remote control camera which was operated by a joystick under the control of the director on duty. Our local movies at that time were also b&w shown by a projector aimed at a vidicon fixed position camera.

Jim, so it is true that some stations, like channel 18, were able to broadcast the network in color before they did any local color programming. I've heard that at one point, many stations didn't have the ability to broadcast anything in color and carried the networks color programs in black and white. Maybe channel 18 did this between 1955 and 1958 because NBC did offer occassional color programs duing this time.

Back in 1958 when we switched to a network show from local telecasting there was a definate flash when we abruptly changed to network synch pulses. This was especially annoying in color. We obtained a Genlock device which automatically did the synch pulse switching. After rhis action we were able to fade to black and other operations on network shows. It's amazing how much I have forgotten in 50 years away from WLEX-TV. Could be my age (73). Of course there is a lot of other memory lapses.

Transmitters originally made for black & white were not capable of handling color without significant modification; namely wider bandpass and flatter frequency response. Color information is centered around 3.58 megahertz in the analog signal.
