Given we're in the holiday time of year, does anyone know when channel 27 last aired its annual Santa show that aired during the afternoon hours? Would it have been in the late 1970s?

John, I'm not sure what show you are referring to. Are you talking about a local program where Santa read letters from viewers? I figure a show like that could have dated back to the '50's on WKYT.

Yes -- every year (December), channel 27 would run a locally produced show in the afternoon where Santa would read letters from viewers. He was accompanied by a Rudolph reindeer-like puppet.
I know the show was on during the 1970s, but was just interested in what year this show last aired -- I'm thinking it was in the late 1970s?

Could be John. I remember watching similar programs on other stations. Those kind of shows with Santa reading letters on the air seems to have vanished which is sad. He sometimes had some hot female helpers which was also nice.

Mary Ann Kuykendall was seen reading letters to Santa on WKYT in the 1970s. The horse puppet, Windy Wonderful was also part of the show.

WLEX also had an afternoon Santa show. At least, I know it did in December of 1967. I was the Art Director at WLEX that year and I created an interior set design for the show along with an exterior effect to make it appear as though a camera was outside the window of Santa's house complete with falling (plastic) snow, zooming through the window with Santa (live) in the background. It was an old hollywood movie technique that worked like a charm. Good effect, if I say so myself. If my memory serves me correctly, the man who played Santa was one of WLEX's salespeople. The format was the same as WKYT's (Santa reading letters, with some children near him, along with some cartoons as show filler.)
